Why you should make a list of all good things when you don’t know how you’re feeling

I made this list of good things today

Sometimes you don’t know what to journal about… or what to do about the way you feel and can’t talk about it with anyone and on such days one of the things that you can do is make a list of all good things… things you like, things that make you happy, things you find thoughtful..

How does it help you ask?

Well, here is how 👇🏼

  1. Shifts focus from negativity: When you’re feeling overwhelmed or unsure of your emotions, your mind might naturally gravitate towards negative thoughts and feelings. Making a list of positive aspects in your life shifts your focus away from the negative, helping to break the cycle of rumination and worry.
  2. Increases gratitude: Listing the good things in your life cultivates a sense of gratitude. Gratitude is a powerful emotion that has been linked to improved mental well-being and increased resilience in the face of challenges.
  3. Provides perspective: During tough times, it’s easy to lose sight of the positive aspects of life. Creating a list of good things reminds you of what is going well, even if it’s just the simple pleasures, and provides perspective on the bigger picture.
  4. Boosts mood: Reflecting on positive aspects can trigger the release of feel-good neurotransmitters like dopamine and serotonin. This can lead to an immediate improvement in your mood and overall sense of well-being.
  5. Encourages positive thinking: By actively seeking out the good things in your life, you engage in a form of positive thinking. Over time, this habit can help rewire your brain to be more optimistic and resilient in the face of challenges.
  6. Acts as a coping mechanism: When you’re unsure about your emotions or experiencing mixed feelings, creating a list of good things can serve as a coping mechanism. It provides a structured activity that helps you channel your thoughts and emotions constructively.
  7. Builds self-awareness: Making a list of positive aspects requires introspection. It encourages you to reflect on your life and recognize what truly matters to you, helping you become more self-aware and in tune with your emotions.
  8. Facilitates communication: If you choose to share your list with someone you trust, it can open the door to meaningful conversations about your feelings and experiences. Talking about the positive aspects of your life can help you process emotions and gain support if needed.

So what would you add to your list of good things?
